Here's how I see it.
The typing area is on the left and the actual chat is on the left. not to mention the typing box is on the TOP left, as well. so it'd be natural for someone to look straight to the top RIGHT after typing in the top LEFT. BUT you could have the typing area on the bottom and have the recent post just above that, like in msn chats.
It all depends on the layout, IMO.
